B&Q Marketplace guide

B&Q Marketplace Listing Requirements: Titles, EANs and Attributes

Last updated

B&Q's marketplace on diy.com lets approved sellers list next to B&Q's own range. It runs on Mirakl, and B&Q checks product content before it goes live. This guide covers how that product data works, what B&Q needs for EANs, how to structure a title, which attributes matter for DIY products, and the most common reasons listings get rejected. A full example listing is near the end.

B&Q publishes some of its rules and keeps others in the onboarding guides sellers get inside Mirakl. So each rule here is tagged with where it comes from: B&Q says Integrators report Our recommendation

The short version

  • • B&Q Marketplace is invite-only. You apply through B&Q's Merchant Hub, then list in Mirakl.
  • • In Mirakl, a product (title, description, images, EAN, attributes) is separate from an offer (price, stock, lead time).
  • • Every product needs an EAN, and you can't list an EAN that B&Q already sells itself.
  • • Integrator guides put titles at 30 to 130 characters, with no all-caps words except LED, no special characters and no repeated words.
  • • Each category has its own required attributes, often with fixed value lists. Missing ones are a common reason for rejection.

Selling on B&Q Marketplace: the basics

B&Q says From B&Q's Merchant Hub FAQs and seller pages (checked 22 October 2026):

How B&Q's Mirakl product data works

B&Q launched the marketplace with Mirakl in March 2022, and you manage your shop in Mirakl's seller back office. The key idea is that a listing is two separate records:

Product

What the customer sees: title, description, images, EAN, brand, attributes, dimensions, materials and any required documents.

Offer

Your commercial terms for that product: price, stock quantity, lead time to ship and logistics class.

Already on Linnworks? Linnworks connects to B&Q through its Mirakl integration, which covers listings and offers, stock and price updates, and orders. Ecom Wizard can send your B&Q copy onto the matching Linnworks product by SKU. See the Ecom Wizard Linnworks integration.

B&Q product titles: pattern and length

We couldn't find B&Q's title rules on its public Merchant Hub pages, so the rules below come from integrator guides by ChannelEngine, Optimizon and e-tailize. All three give the same 30 to 130 character range.

Title rules Integrators report

  • • 30 to 130 characters. e-tailize says titles outside that range are rejected.
  • • Pattern: Brand + Colour + Product type + Size + Pack quantity (ChannelEngine). Optimizon suggests brand, colour, design, material and key features.
  • • No fully capitalised words. ChannelEngine names LED as the only exception.
  • • No special characters. ChannelEngine's examples include ? / | \ and _.
  • • Don't repeat words, don't use trademarks you have no right to, and avoid the terms on the banned list B&Q gives sellers.

Watch the field names. In Hemi's documentation of B&Q's product import, the title goes in the name field, which it describes as the “Product description”. The longer description goes in Body Copy.

The pattern we use Our recommendation

Order the details by how much they help a DIY shopper decide, and pick the version that fits the product:

Likely to be rejected

PREMIUM Cordless Drill | Best Drill For DIY 18V

All-caps words (PREMIUM and DIY), marketing words (premium, best), a pipe character and “Drill” repeated. It also has no brand.

Follows the pattern

Hollinwood 18V Cordless Combi Drill with 2 Batteries and Charger

Brand, spec, product type and what's in the box, in 64 characters. (Hollinwood is a made-up brand.)

Coming from Amazon? Don't paste your Amazon title straight in. Amazon now caps most titles at 75 characters (see our guide to Amazon's 75-character title rule), so the colour, size and pack details often end up in Amazon's Item Highlights field instead. On B&Q, those details belong in the title.

Key technical attributes for DIY products

Missing or invalid attributes are a common reason Mirakl imports fail. The exact list depends on the category, so always work from the template for your category. Here's what to have ready.

Core product fields Integrators report

Integrator documentation for B&Q's product import (Hemi) marks these as required: category, shop SKU, product name, EAN, main image, brand, product type, pack quantity and pack type, body copy and guarantee (choose “Statutory” if you offer nothing beyond the legal minimum). It also marks as required declarations covering REACH, whether the product contains wood, and FSC or PEFC certification.

Recommended content fields Integrators report

Up to 8 extra images, a PDF product guide, instruction manual and safety manual, a video, Unique Selling Point 01 to 08, Selling Copy and Key_Feature. Hemi describes Key_Feature as a single call-out feature used in the marketplace title, not a list. Ecom Wizard writes the body copy, the 8 unique selling points and the selling copy for you.

Category attributes Integrators report

Each category adds its own attributes, many with a fixed list of allowed values and some with a set format. e-tailize singles out pack quantity, dimensions and weight as attributes that decide whether a listing goes live. For tools, lighting and electricals, expect technical specs such as power too. On Mirakl marketplaces, an empty required attribute, a value outside the allowed list or a value in the wrong format fails the import (Channable).

Compliance B&Q says

  • • Products must comply with UK law, for example UKCA marking (CE for Northern Ireland), UK REACH, timber regulations and low voltage rules, and you must be able to prove it on request.
  • • For electrical products, upload the latest energy label and give the energy rating.
  • • Hold accurate instructions or manuals for every product.
  • • Wood and paper products, including hidden parts such as the paper bags in a vacuum cleaner: at least 20% of them had to be FSC or PEFC certified (or third-party verified as recycled) by 31 December 2025, rising to 100% by 31 December 2028.

Common B&Q rejection reasons and how to avoid them

When a product is rejected, the reason is in Mirakl. Channable's Mirakl guide points to Catalog > Product imports, where the non-integrated products report lists what was rejected and why, and the source file error report shows problems with the file itself (menu names can vary). B&Q expects sellers to fix product issues within 2 days of B&Q flagging them.

1

Duplicate of a first-party product

B&Q says

Why: The EAN is one B&Q already sells itself. Mirakl shows the status “Rejected > Duplicate of a first party product”.

Fix: Check your range against first-party products in Mirakl’s Catalogue Manager before you load it, and leave those EANs out.

2

Missing or invalid EAN

Integrators report

Why: Integrator documentation for B&Q’s product import marks the EAN as required, so a product can’t be created without one.

Fix: Give every variant its own valid EAN, and use exactly the same EAN in your product file and your offer file.

3

Title breaks the format rules

Integrators report

Why: e-tailize says titles outside 30 to 130 characters are rejected. ChannelEngine’s B&Q guide also tells sellers to avoid fully capitalised words (LED is the exception), special characters, repeated words and terms on the banned list B&Q gives sellers.

Fix: Follow the title rules above, write in Title Case, and check your titles against the banned-terms list B&Q gives you.

4

Missing category attributes or values outside the list

Integrators report

Why: Each B&Q category has its own required attributes, many with a fixed list of allowed values. On Mirakl marketplaces, an empty required attribute, a value not in the list or a value in the wrong format fails the import. Channable’s Mirakl guide lists errors such as “Required attribute is empty” and “An attribute has a value that is not one of the allowed values”.

Fix: Download the template for the exact category, fill every required column, and pick values from B&Q’s lists rather than typing your own.

5

Brand not approved yet

B&Q says

Why: B&Q reviews and approves brand names in Mirakl. It’s one of the checks B&Q completes before your shop can open.

Fix: Get each brand you sell approved before you load products under it.

6

Images that don’t match the product

B&Q says

Why: B&Q requires images of the version you actually sell, at the resolution it specifies. Integrator guides (e-tailize, Optimizon) quote a square image of at least 500 x 500 pixels.

Fix: Shoot or source images per variant (the right colour, size and pack), and check B&Q’s current image spec.

7

Missing compliance documents

B&Q says

Why: For electrical products you must upload the latest energy label and give the energy rating. B&Q may also ask for declarations of conformity, safety data sheets, test reports, instructions or certificates.

Fix: Collect the documents for each product before you upload, especially for electrical, chemical and wood or paper products.

8

Offer loaded before the product exists

Integrators report

Why: On Mirakl marketplaces an offer (price and stock) is matched to a product by EAN. If the product is still pending or failed its import, the offer fails with an error such as “Offer - product not found” (Channable).

Fix: Load products first, wait until they’re accepted, then load the offers.

You'd still fill in (in B&Q's template)

EAN, category, product type, colour, finish, material, IP rating, wattage, colour temperature, dimensions, weight, pack quantity and type, guarantee, the energy label and rating, images and instructions. Attribute names and allowed values vary by category.

Notice the split: the title stays factual, with LED as its only all-caps word and no repeated words. The benefits go in the selling copy, and the specs also go into the category attributes.

Writing B&Q listings with Ecom Wizard

Ecom Wizard writes the copy fields of a B&Q listing from one product record, the same record it uses for your Amazon, eBay, Shopify and TikTok Shop listings. Add the product once (paste in your Amazon copy or supplier description, add the EAN and your selling points) and generate the B&Q version.

What it doesn't do: it doesn't connect to B&Q or Mirakl directly, check your EANs against B&Q's own range, or fill in category attributes, images, prices, stock or compliance documents. You still do those in Mirakl or through your integrator.

Frequently asked questions

What are the B&Q Marketplace listing requirements?+

Every product needs an EAN, a title, a description, images of the exact version you sell, a B&Q-approved brand and the attributes its category requires, plus any compliance documents (such as an energy label for electrical products). Price, stock, lead time and logistics class go on a separate offer. B&Q checks product content before your shop opens and expects flagged product issues to be fixed within 2 days.

How long can a B&Q Marketplace product title be?+

B&Q doesn’t publish its title rules openly. Integrator guides from ChannelEngine, Optimizon and e-tailize put the range at 30 to 130 characters. Ecom Wizard keeps B&Q titles between 30 and 120 characters to leave some headroom. Check the limit in your own Mirakl template, because rules can vary by category.

Do I need an EAN to sell on B&Q Marketplace?+

Yes. B&Q lists EANs as part of the product data you supply, and integrator documentation for B&Q’s product import marks the EAN as required. Each variant (size, colour or pack) is its own product with its own EAN. You also can’t list an EAN that B&Q already sells itself.

Why was my B&Q Marketplace listing rejected?+

Typical causes are an EAN that B&Q already sells first party, a missing or invalid EAN, a title outside the 30 to 130 character range or with all-caps words, special characters or repeated words, missing required category attributes, values outside B&Q’s allowed lists, an unapproved brand, or missing compliance documents. In Mirakl, the product import reports show each rejected product and the reason.

Can I sell a product that B&Q already sells?+

Not the same EAN. B&Q’s FAQ says sellers can’t sell the exact EAN B&Q sells first party; those products are rejected with the status “Rejected > Duplicate of a first party product”. You can still sell other products in the same category, such as a different drill.

How much does it cost to sell on B&Q Marketplace?+

B&Q’s Merchant Hub lists a £49 per month subscription plus a commission on each sale. Commission rates depend on the product category and are shown in Mirakl excluding VAT, so a 15% rate costs 18% once VAT is added. Some older third-party guides still quote £39 a month, so go by B&Q’s current terms.

Can I reuse my Amazon listing on B&Q?+

Reuse the facts, not the format. Amazon now caps most titles at 75 characters and has added a separate Item Highlights field. B&Q titles can be longer, and B&Q’s template has its own fields for body copy, unique selling points and selling copy. Ecom Wizard writes both listings from the same product record.

Can I manage B&Q listings through Linnworks?+

Linnworks connects to B&Q through its Mirakl integration, covering listings and offers, stock and price updates, and orders. Ecom Wizard can send your B&Q copy onto the matching Linnworks product by SKU, on the B&Q (Mirakl) channel. Whether that copy then reaches B&Q depends on how your Linnworks Mirakl integration is set up.
