Free eBay Title Builder (UK)

Last updated

Fill in what you know about your item. The builder puts the most important words first (brand, model, then what the item is), counts against eBay's 80-character title limit as you type, and flags capitals, symbols, filler words and repeats. It's free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.

Try an example:

Leave empty if the item has no brand.

Separate with commas. Only add words that are true for this item.

Optional. eBay has its own condition setting, so by default this goes last and is dropped first when space runs out.

Word order: most important first

Put the words a buyer is most likely to type first. If the title runs over 80 characters, the parts at the bottom are dropped first.

Item specifics to fill in on eBay

eBay blocks new or revised listings that are missing required item specifics, and buyers use them in the search filters. Fill in every required one and as many recommended ones as you can.

  • Brand: not enteredFill it in even if the brand is already in the title. No brand? Use “Unbranded”.
  • Model or MPN: not enteredUse the box eBay shows for your category: Model for a model name, MPN for a manufacturer part number.
  • Type: not entered
  • Colour: not entered
  • Size: not entered
  • Condition: not enteredChoose it in eBay’s condition setting too.
  • Product identifier (EAN barcode, ISBN for books, or MPN): not enteredAdd it if the item has one, and make sure it matches the exact product.
  • Everything else eBay lists for your category, such as material, style, features and pack size.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored. This is a rule-based builder, not a keyword database: it doesn’t show search volumes.

How to use the eBay title builder

  1. 1

    Fill in what you know

Brand, what the item is, model or part number, the key spec, size, colour and any extra words that are true for this item. Leave the brand empty if the item has no brand.

  2. 2

    Check the word order

The most important words go first. Use the arrows to change the order. If the title runs over 80 characters, the parts at the bottom are dropped first.

  3. 3

    Fix the warnings, then copy

Clear any warnings, copy the title into eBay, then fill in the item specifics. The checklist under the title shows which ones to add.

How eBay search (Cassini) uses your title

Cassini is the name of the search engine eBay began rolling out in 2012 and 2013 to replace its older engine, Voyager. By default, Voyager matched words in the title only. Cassini was built to search the whole listing, including the description. eBay's UK help pages describe how listings are sorted by Best Match, which eBay says takes into account:

eBay's Seller Centre says its search finds the listing titles that closely match what a buyer types, so the title matters. But it's only part of the picture: item specifics, photos, price and your terms count too. Our page on how Ecom Wizard writes Cassini-optimised eBay listings goes into more detail.

eBay title rules in brief (UK)

Rules can change and some vary by category. Check eBay's listing form and Seller Centre for your category before you list.

Before and after: UK eBay title examples

These are illustrative examples, not real listings, and not based on search data. The builder flags the symbols, capitals, filler and repeats. Spelling, and checking every word is true for your item, are down to you.

Power tools

Before (54 characters)

**WOW** BOSCH DRILL!!! CORDLESS DRILL 18V L@@K BARGAIN

After (70 characters)

Bosch Professional GSR 18V-21 Cordless Drill Driver 18V Body Only Blue

  • • Brand and model number first, so a buyer searching the exact model finds it.
  • • Symbols, capitals and filler (“WOW”, “L@@K”, “BARGAIN”) removed.
  • • “Drill” said once. “Body Only” added so buyers know what’s in the box.

Fashion

Before (40 characters)

mens trainers nike size 9 good condition

After (59 characters)

Nike Air Max 90 Mens Trainers UK Size 9 White Black Leather

  • • Brand and model name lead the title.
  • • “UK” added to the size so buyers know which sizing you mean.
  • • Colour and material fill the spare space. Describe wear in the listing and photos rather than the title.

Home & garden (unbranded)

Before (58 characters)

Garden Hose Garden Hose Pipe 30m Garden Hose Reel Free P&P

After (69 characters)

Expandable Garden Hose Pipe 30m 100ft with 8 Function Spray Gun Green

  • • No brand, so the product type leads.
  • • “Garden hose” said once instead of three times.
  • • “Reel” removed because this item doesn’t come with one. Every word must be true for the item. “Free P&P” removed because postage has its own place in the listing.

Toys & collectables

Before (48 characters)

lego star wars millenium falcon set huge RARE!!!

After (75 characters)

LEGO Star Wars 75192 Millennium Falcon UCS Complete with Instructions & Box

  • • Spelling fixed (“Millennium”). eBay asks for titles with correct spelling.
  • • Set number added, so buyers searching for that exact set can find it.
  • • “RARE!!!” and “huge” replaced with facts buyers care about: complete, instructions and box.

Need keyword ideas as well?

This builder works with the words you give it. If you want ideas, Ecom Wizard's AI keyword research for Amazon and eBay suggests buyer-intent keywords for your products, and the ones you add to your priority list are worked into the listings the AI writes. They're AI suggestions, not eBay search-volume data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit for an eBay UK title?

eBay titles can be up to 80 characters. eBay’s UK help asks for a clear, concise title with correct spelling and no more than 80 characters, and its Seller Centre suggests using as many of those characters as you can, while avoiding irrelevant words. The builder counts spaces as characters, which is the safe way to count.

Is this eBay title builder free, and do I need to sign up?

It’s free and needs no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us or stored.

Does the tool show eBay search volumes or keyword data?

No. It’s a rule-based builder: it puts your words in a sensible order, counts characters and flags common problems. It has no eBay search data. Use the words you know buyers use for your item, and fill in item specifics in eBay’s listing form.

What is eBay Cassini?

Cassini is the name of the search engine eBay began rolling out in 2012 and 2013 to replace its older engine, Voyager. By default, Voyager matched words in the title only. Cassini was built to search the whole listing, including the description. eBay’s help pages today describe search sorting as “Best Match”, which weighs up how well a listing matches the search, popularity, price, listing quality and completeness, terms such as returns and handling time, and the seller’s track record.

What order should the words go in an eBay title?

Put the words a buyer is most likely to type first, usually the brand, model and what the item is, then key specs, size and colour. eBay’s Seller Centre suggests including the brand, model or type, colour, style and model number. In the builder you can change the order with the arrows. If the title runs over 80 characters, the parts at the bottom are dropped first.

Can Ecom Wizard write the eBay description too?

Yes. Ecom Wizard writes an eBay title of up to 80 characters and a complete HTML description in your brand colours, ready to paste into eBay’s description field. The 7-day free trial includes 20 listings on one marketplace of your choice, such as eBay, and no card is required.
